I come up with new ideas, but when I see what trifling things are financed in the world, I lose my appetite completely. I am convinced that everybody should do what he or she loves, knows or understands. I wish 28 Voices that everyone’s wishes are fulfilled. The world now, however, is built on a completely different, materialist basis, as I realised while working with water. I will return to this theme below, but let me first continue the story chronologically with my work for People and Water and its relationship to the social entrepreneurship organisation Ashoka in the 1990s.

I was one of the founders of the Slovak River Network, and then, when I found that the way money was dealt with in this network was wrong, I established the non-governmental organisation People and Water. People and Water was launched in August 1993 in Slovakia. The mission of our organisation is to promote an alternative, integrated water management. It was created in response to the new Slovakian state water management policy. The alternative approach we created was called ‘Water for the Third Millennium’ (People and Water, 1994).

The situation is unfamiliar. They slowly get to know each other better by playing relaxed communication games. No one is driven too hard. Nothing happens that the youths find embarrassing. The ice is broken. The goal today is to clarify what they expect from the course. More still: they have to say what they want to learn here. Everyone has a different objective: to be in control of themselves and not fight anymore; to be able to control oneself even when provoked; to understand why one completely ‘flips out’ and how to get things back under control; to avoid becoming a repeat offender and ending up in jail again; how to Voices 36 keep from slipping up and being lead astray by ‘old mates’ again; to stop talking ‘rubbish’ and doing ‘stupid’ things; to prepare for life after prison.
